Welcome to the first edition of AI Emergence - a newsletter covering AI while it is Emerging :)

What would the newsletter be about? Sounds a little ironic - but in some sense we are building Human Intelligence about Artificial Intelligence!

Exciting industry forecasts are out there, on Analytics Vidhya, from Industry Experts and many more. Here are some common noteworthy themes:

  • OpenAI is expected to innovate further and maintain its lead. GPT-5 expected during the year. Google, Anthropic, and other players will continue to challenge OpenAI.

  • The open-source LLM models will see major improvements and are expected to reach GPT4 performance in 2024.

  • AI agents will become mainstream and will continue to automate more tasks.

  • Prompt-based video production will improve drastically leading to new video production workflows in 2024.

  • Deepfakes / AI Media will push the need for AI governance. I expect new regulations to come out. With elections in multiple countries coming up - this can have a huge impact.

CaliExpress by Flippy is not just a restaurant; it’s a technological marvel (Source). These robots, equipped with advanced AI, handle the entire cooking process, promising a seamless and efficient experience for customers.

OpenAI’s Annualised revenue now tops $1.6 Bn (Source). That is a 20% jump in revenue since mid-October!

Apple is late to the Generative AI party, but it is entering it in its way. Apple research has showcased interesting developments (Source) and also launched its first open-source multimodal LLM Ferret (Source). Apple has always been a proponent of on-device learning and its powerful chips can enable new applications on the device. This could be very exciting.

Interesting report from John G. Roberts Jr. on how he sees AI helping the courts in the future. He feels that AI could be a great help with all the paperwork, but doesn’t see not having humans in the loop for a long time. If you are interested, look at pages 5 and 6 specifically.

  • Uttar Pradesh plans to create India's first AI city in Lucknow, focusing on economic growth through AI integration. The government has dedicated 40 acres for this tech-driven project, which will include research centers and educational institutions. This initiative is part of Uttar Pradesh's strategy to achieve a US$1 trillion economy in five years.

  • Kerala Gears Up to Transform Kochi into a Global AI Hub with IBM Partnership.

  • Microsoft has initiated the deployment of its AI assistant application, known as Copilot, on Apple devices, making it accessible for both iPhones and iPads. Previously, Copilot was introduced for Android devices by Microsoft. Source

  • Google's VideoPoet, a comprehensive large language model (LLM), for video generation. This model is capable of multiple video creation tasks, such as converting text or images to video, stylizing videos, and even extending video scenes (inpainting and outpainting). Additionally, it can transform videos into audio, showcasing its versatility in handling various video-related tasks. (Demo)

  • GPT Trainer is a tool to build a chatbot on your data. I can feed my writings, talks, and content and build a “Kunal bot”. Looks interesting and promising from what I have seen till now.

  • The awesome free LLM Course by Maxime Labonne on GitHub to get into LLMs. If you love spending time on GitHub and learning by yourself - this is just the course you need to start in LLMs.

  • In a recent episode of “Leading With Data”, I talked to David Zakkam on some of the problems he worked on Swiggy, Meta and Uber. An awesome podcast to hear the impact of Machine Learning on these new-age businesses.

2024 is the most exciting period to date for AI professionals. With so much action happening all around - new digital tools, AI-powered restaurants to Courtrooms. We have never had such an impact on the world!

The beauty of it is all of us know this is just the start of the (Gen)AI Revolution. So - buckle up for the journey, keep learning and building!
